In 2017 the United Nations declared 2021-2030 The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Since 2018, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) has been working with thousands of stakeholders from governments, UN partners, scientific organisations, the private sector, industry, and civil society to design and develop the mission of the Ocean Decade and the outcomes required for attaining the Ocean We Want by 2030.
From this consultation, a common framework has been developed, that if implemented would ensure that scientific evidence and research can support actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and more particularly to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
To achieve this ambition, a detailed Implementation Plan has been published which outlines a governance framework to organise what nations’ get done around Actions, Objectives, Challenges and Outcomes.
