UN Ocean Decade Conference | Australian Pre-Briefing
In preparation for the UN Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona on 10-12 April 2024, we coordinated and hosted a pre-briefing webinar for Australian ocean stakeholders, as part of our Ocean Decade Australia Knowledge Series.
In the session, we provided an overview of the of the UN Decade framework, including the 10 Ocean Challenges, the Ocean Decade’s 2030 Vision process which, through the development of 10 Decade Challenge White Papers, aims to outline how the successful outcomes of the UN Ocean Decade will be measured.
The agenda for the UN Ocean Decade Conference was grouped around the 10 Decade Challenges, where the Decade Challenge White Papers were presented and discussed in thematic sessions, providing a platform for global stakeholders to engage, and identify a common measure of success, key targets and milestones that can be used to measure impact.
We were delighted to be joined by Dr Karen Evans, ODA co-founder and joint coordinator for the 3rd World Ocean Assessment, who has been engaged in the process via the Decade Challenge working groups. Dr Evans outlined how the key messages from each of the White Papers will be integrated into a final conference ‘outcome statement’ - The Barcelona Statement - that outlines key priorities for world leaders to address at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in 2025.
