The 2023 Ocean Business Leaders’ Summit was a rare opportunity to consider a natural system on which we rely so greatly but that is not often obvious or visible in business decision-making.
The ocean covers 71% of our planet, regulates our climate, transports Australia’s goods, is home to profound cultural heritage, and provides resources, services and livelihoods for billions of people and millions of businesses. Yet few would consider themselves “ocean businesses” or “ocean business leaders’”.
Ocean Decade Australia has put Australia’s commitment to deliver a Sustainable Ocean Plan by 2025 at the foundation, and the concept of Valuing Nature at the heart. A major output of the Summit as a working meeting is the Summit White Paper that will provide guidance from the business community to government as Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Plan is developed.
"A Sustainable Ocean Plan aims to guide public and private sector decision-makers on how to sustainably manage a nation's ocean area under national jurisdiction to advance long-term economic and social development, by protecting the natural marine ecosystems that underpin that development." ~ Ocean Panel
Work on the Summit White Paper has begun and we are processing the data collected from the event which is drawn from a variety of sources. The Summit White Paper will be launched in late April/early May. Please be in touch if you have further information via email at the link below
This Summit was designed to level up the conversation about nature, finance, business, and industry for the Ocean Realm, delivering a cross-sector conversation, and the opportunity for all participants to apply their experience and expertise.
The Summit sought input to develop a visionary ambition from the private sector, to understand the current state of play, and the principles, shifts and catalysts required that will lead to a thriving and sustainable ocean economy that is inclusive, equitable and truly transformational for Australia.
This begins with conversation and the opportunity to create new networks, unexpected partnerships and novel, innovative approaches to business action that looks well beyond 2050.
Amongst our 60+ speakers and contributors we are delighted to welcome Minster Tanya Plibersek, NSW Minister James Griffin, Tony Goldner (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures: TNFD), Pete Ceglinski (Seabin), Drew Clarke AO PSM (Australian Energy Market Operator: AEMO), Erin Coldham (Star of the South), Dr Andrew Forrest (Fortescue and Minderoo Foundation), Nicole Yazbek-Martin (Australian Sustainable Finance Institute: ASFI), Alison Rowe (The Nature Conservancy), Emma Carmody (Restore Blue), Danny Nielsen (Vestas), Patrick Hone (Fisheries Research and Development Corporation: FRDC), and Sam Elsom (Sea Forest).

The global focus on climate change and the environment has led to a growing understanding that the loss of natural ecosystems and biodiversity poses major risks to businesses, and that nature-positive investments offer opportunity and rewards. Australia’s input to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), coupled with a commitment to delivering a Sustainable Ocean Plan by 2025, provides the impetus for the Summit. A timely opportunity to consider how we align production, protection, and prosperity #fortheocean
This Summit has been designed to level up the conversation about nature, finance, business, and industry for the Ocean Realm with a true cross section of professions, experiences, and expertise. The Ocean Immersion sessions were facilitated under the Chatham House rule. A major output of the event is the Summit White Paper that we anticipate will provide important guidance from the business community to government as Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Plan is developed.
